Jamia Islamia located in the heart of Shawlands, Glasgow, officially opened in the 1980s. The mosque was founded by Mohammad Siddiq Naqshbandi رحمة الله عليه, a man driven by a profound vision. He dreamed of creating a sacred space where the teachings of Islam could flourish, guiding the community and the generations to come. His dedication was fuelled by a desire to spread knowledge, nurture spirituality, and strengthen the local Muslim community.

The founder initially purchased the original building in the 1980s which was just a small prayer hall, and through daily prayers, gatherings and Qur’an classes, he quickly built a reputation as a respected Imam in the local community. As word spread, the mosque became a vital centre for Islamic education and worship in Glasgow.

By the 1990s, the growing number of worshippers made it clear that more space was needed. This led to the construction of the main prayer hall and the expansion of the wudhu area. The founder with the support of his friends and dedicated worshippers extended the prayer hall. In 2005 the main prayer hall was extended again to the boundary wall, ensuring the mosque could accommodate the increasing congregation.

In 2017, construction of the double-storey side hall began. This new space was designed for community events, such as Iftar programs during Ramadan, and now stands as a vibrant hub for gatherings and spiritual upliftment. Today, majority of the construction of Jamia Islamia is complete, providing a welcoming environment for worship and Islamic community activities.

Over the years Jamia Islamia has been honoured to host many events and respected figures including Sheikh Pir Zain Ul Akhtab Siddiqui and others who share mutual support and spiritual guidance. The founder’s mission was to create a mosque where people not only prayed but also learned, connected, and found guidance for their daily lives, fostering a strong and supportive community rooted in the values of Islam.

As we look to the future, Jamia Islamia remains committed to solidifying its educational programs to ensure that the next generation is equipped with the knowledge and guidance they need. We aim to increase the number of regular worshippers and continue serving as a beacon of faith and learning for the community.
