Mohammad Siddiq Naqshbandi رحمة الله عليه
Jamia Islamia Glasgow was founded by Mohammad Siddiq Naqshbandi, who worked with the local Muslim community to establish a dedicated place for worship, education and guidance in Shawlands.
His vision was to bring people together through prayer and Islamic learning, and to create a welcoming centre that could continue serving future generations.
From a small prayer hall to a growing community
Established in December 1987, Jamia Islamia Glasgow grew with the commitment and support of local worshippers and the wider community.
Daily prayers, Qur’an classes and gatherings formed the foundation of the mosque community.
Planning approval was secured for an extension of the premises and a larger prayer hall.
The major extension project was completed in November, expanding facilities for worshippers.
The main prayer hall was extended further to accommodate a growing congregation.
Work began on a double-storey side hall for community gatherings and activities.
Built through faith, perseverance and community support
A vision for Shawlands
In December 1987, Mohammad Siddiq Naqshbandi established Jamia Islamia to meet a need for local Islamic worship, learning and guidance in Shawlands and neighbouring communities. The mosque began modestly, as a small prayer space. Through daily worship, religious gatherings, Qur’an teaching and the support of local families, the congregation steadily grew.
The founder dedicated himself to building a place where people of different ages and backgrounds could come together, learn about their faith and find support within their community.
Expanding the prayer hall
As more people came to the mosque, the original facilities became too small. In 1995, the founder secured planning approval for an extension with the support of the community, Mohammed Sarwar MP and local councillors. The project created a larger prayer hall and facilities to better serve worshippers, and was completed in November 1999.
Community contributions and the commitment of dedicated worshippers continued to shape Jamia Islamia’s development. In 2005, the main prayer hall was extended again towards the boundary wall to provide additional space.
Room for future generations
The mosque’s mission has always extended beyond its prayer hall, with Islamic education, Ramadan activities and religious and community gatherings forming an important part of its work. In 2017, work began on a double-storey side hall intended to provide more space for gatherings, programmes and learning.
Today, Jamia Islamia Glasgow continues to build on the foundations laid by its founder and those who supported the mosque through the decades, serving Shawlands through worship, knowledge and community connection.
